海軍は横須賀基地（神奈川県）から深海の引き揚げ作業の専門家を現場海域に派遣。
12月19日に飛行データを記録したフライトデータレコーダーからとみられる三つの異なる信号を探知した。
うち二つの信号はKC-130の位置を示し、残る信号はF/A-18に関係するものと考えられるという。
三つの信号は水深約3000メートルで確認された。

信号の探知には、船上からセンサーが付いたケーブルを海中に垂らしてえい航する海底探査用の音響信号探知システム「TPL-25」が使用された。
水深約6000メートルまで探査可能だという。
同ソナーは2014年に南シナ海上空で239人を乗せたまま消息を絶ったマレーシア航空機捜索の際にも投入されたという。
