1949/03/02

WASHINGTON, March l -(JPh - Over army objections, the House passed today a bill to pay $20,000 damages to relatives of six persons killed near Bly, Ore- by a Japanese balloon bomb during the war.
The deaths occurred on March day school class came across the bomb while on a fishing trip minUter died when they tutted at the contrivance.
Wartime censorship banned any mention of the balloon-borne bombs at the time.
The bill, which now goes to the Senate, would provide $6,000 for Frank J. Patike, Grand Forks, N.D., who lost a son and a daughter; $5,000 to Archie Mitchell of Bly, the minister whose wife was killed; and $3,000 each to J.L. Shoemaker, Einer Engen and N.L. Gifford of Bly, who lost sons.

'HONEST JOHN' ROCKETS SUPPLIED U.S. IN JAPAN

1955/08/22

TOKYO (Reuters) - United States armed forces in the Far East were strengthened during the weekend with the arrival in Japan of "Honest John" artillery rockets, one of the newest U.S. weapons which can be fitted with either atomic or high-explosive warheads.
U.S. forces in the Far East already have atomic guns on Okinawa, 500 miles south of Japan.
Japanese reaction to the new rockets is expected to be strong.

Japanese Recall Bluff They Ran on Chinese

1955/01/26

Tokyo, Jan. 26 (P) - Japanese recalled with a chuckle today a bluff they ran on the Chinese 18 years ago near the Tachens, and passed it on for what it is worth today.
In 1937 a modest Japanese landing force, perhaps a regiment or two, went ashore near Hanchow in the Tachen area.
Feeling a bit exposed, they ran up a giant balloon with a streamer in huge Chinese characters: "Million-man Japanese army lands at Hanchow."
They said it worked.

新高山は日本統治時代の名で現在は玉山(ぎょくざん)。
標高3950メートルを超える。
富士山より200メートル近くも高い。
