Navy Signs Stowaway
(Hardly a Dog's Life)

1953/05/15

Tokyo Wl - A fuzzy little puppy with a waggly tail stowed away on the U.S. Navy's famed aircraft carrier Valley Forge one rainy night at Yokosuka and came through his adventure with the prizes and privileges of an old sea dog.
The Navy told the pup's tale yesterday: somehow the little pooch evaded the officer of the deck and the gang way watch and shivered for hours in a dark corner of the hangar deck.
A sympathetic bluejacket whisked him below.
After stowing away a ration of warm milk, the pup fell asleep.
His troubles began the next day not long after the bugler had roused the flattop's 3,000-man-and-a-dog crew, the ship put out for sea, bound for Korea and the fighting.
The puppy, of Oriental but otherwise undetermined origin, presented a problem, all right.
Quarantine regulations prohibit the transportation of pets picked up in a foreign port.
While the executive officer pondered, the bluejackets went to work.
They "enlisted" the pup in naval service, dressed him in a trim, zip-front blue jumper topped with Korean and UN campaign ribbons, photographed him and provided an identification card with the name "Coddy".
Coddy cut a fine figure of a sailor but his tour aboard the carrier was short-lived.
The dog-gone exec found a sailor who was flying to Japan on emergency leave.
So typewritten orders were cut for Coddy.
The sailor and pup boarded a plane and roared down the flight deck.
Coddy made history.
He was the first dog to wing off the Valley Forge.
The future looks rosy for Coddy, the combat veteran.

IN CHUTE LEAP

1952/01/03

TOKYO, Jan. 3 J - Teddy, the para-pooch, almost made his last jump today.
The little dog leaped from a big transport plane with paratroopers practicing jumps over southern Japan.
But as Teddy's chute snapped open, a strap broke, leaving him suspended by his hind legs.
The veteran para-pooch apparently knew enough not to struggle.
He landed safely, but soldiers said he'd have slipped from the harness if he'd started wriggling.

LeMay in Tokyo, Flies Into Storm Over Medal

1964/12/07

Tokyo, Dec. 6 (UPI) - U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Curtis E. LeMay arrived here today amid a controversy over the Japanese government's decision to honor him with the highest decoration Japan bestows on foreigners.
Japan's leftist elements, including Communists and Socialists, have charged the government was awarding the Grand Cordon of the Rising Sun to a man who was involved in dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.
Involved in Planning
The official U.S. Air Force record showed he was not the commander of the 20th Air Force Command which dropped the bombs on the two Japanese cities, but did have a hand in planning the attacks.
LeMay arrived in nearby Yokota air base this evening to pay his respects to the Japan air self-defense force on its 10th anniversary.
He refused to comment on the controversy.
The Japanese government it decided Friday to award the Medal to LeMay for his contribution to the establishment of Japan's modern air defense force.
The Socialist Party said it would register a formal protest with the government tomorrow and question Premier Eisaku Sato on the award at a meeting of the Diet.

WWII Marine deaths checked

2000/04/27

TOKYO - The Navy is investigating the deaths of three American Marines - including one from Greater Cincinnati - whose remains were concealed in a cave on Okinawa from the end of World War II until 1998, a Marine spokesman said.
Acting on a tip in 1998, police in the town of Naha discovered the remains of the Marines.
After the Navy identified the bones as those of three privates from the 37th Marine Company, including John Morris Smith, the remains of Pfc. Smith and the others were returned to families in the United States within the past month.
Japanese news reports Wednesday said Naha residents and Japanese soldiers killed the U.S. servicemen in retaliation for the rape of Okinawan women.
The reports quoted residents who said that the bodies had been dumped in the cave and that villagers vowed never to speak of the incident.
Efforts to reach Pfc. Smith's family were unsuccessful Wednesday night.
Pfc. Smith, 19, and the others disappeared on Okinawa July 14, 1945.
Pfc. Smith's remains were returned to Greater Cincinnati on March 24, and he was buried with honors.
