TUCSON, Ariz. - The U.S. Air Force plans to retire 42 A-10 aircraft at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base next year, a move that would cut the base’s fleet of “Warthogs” in half, a member of Arizona’s congressional delegation said.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick identified the proposed cuts in letters to the Air Force and to U.S. House committees, The Arizona Daily Star reports.

An A-10 Thunderbolt II made a belly landing at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, after its pilot declared an in-flight emergency Tuesday during a routine training flight, according to the Air Force.

The A-10C, assigned to the 75th Fighter Squadron at the base, touched down "without its landing gear extended," officials with the 23rd Wing said in a news release.

USAF’s 2021 budget request looks to cut 44 A-10s from the fleet, along with dozens of other legacy aircraft.
Nahom said the remaining seven combat squadrons of Warthogs is the “right number” to operate in permissive or lightly contested airspace.

“Seven, we think, is the sweet spot: three Active Duty, three [Air National] Guard, one Reserve squadron,” which should be enough for operations, test, and training, he said.
