Supersonic Air Force jet involved in fire, landing gear problem at Mather Airport

A supersonic jet occupied by two pilots had a landing gear problem on a runway and was involved in a fire at Mather Airport on Thursday morning, officials said.
No one was hurt.

He described the student airman as a 24-year-old from Japan.
The instructor, he said, was a 25-year-old Air Force lieutenant.

The Montgomery airport abuts an Air Force facility known as Dannelly Field, home of Alabama Air National Guard's 187th Fighter Wing.
It's not clear if a pilot was trying to land there.

It takes several years to become an ASDF fighter pilot, with graduates of the Air Officer Candidate School and other places first undergoing basic floght training.
They then take pilot training for more than 50 weeks in Japan or the United States.

Even after obtaining a pilot’s license, they end up staying in the United States for around 2 1/2 years to undergo training and learn English.
After wrapping up their final training back home, they start official duties as fighter pilots.

He was identified as Scot Ames Jr., a 24-year-old instructor pilot with the 50th Flying Training Squadron at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi.
He was from Pekin, Indiana.

航空自衛隊トップの井筒俊司航空幕僚長は４日の記者会見で、米南部アラバマ州で練習機の訓練中に墜落して死亡した植崎廉偲２等空尉（２５）の遺体が同日、空自のＫＣ-７６７空中給油輸送機で愛知県の小牧基地に到着したと明らかにした。
