近代軍事史最慘烈的「馬桶慘案」當屬納粹德國U-1206潛艇沉沒事件，該艇於1944年在蘇格蘭近海首次執行戰鬥任務途中，因艦長如廁後「開錯閥門」和前來幫助的技師找不到正確閥門，導致混著海水的汙水狂噴而出，還因淹沒電池引發化學反應，讓艦內滿是毒氣，最終艦長被迫下令上浮，並在鑿沉艦艇後全員棄船逃亡。該艇直到2012年才被發現殘骸。
