Colonel John Boyd, a maverick US fighter pilot, is widely credited with "inventing” Energy-Manoeuvrability (E-M) theory in the 1960s - a mathematical framework for understanding a plane's speed, climb, turn rate, and overall combat potential.
According to this narrative, Boyd transformed dogfighting from instinct into science, producing the intellectual foundation for aircraft such as the F‑15 and F‑16.
But this origin story is not true.
The real revolution occurred twenty years earlier, and in Britain.
