Many of the RN's losses were not the direct result of failures of its weapon systems.
Sheffield had no chance to react, Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram were outside the RN's main air defence umbrella, Atlantic Conveyor had no defences, and Coventry was lost as a result of poor manoeuvring.
Most ships that were attacked, including Sheffield, Ardent and Antelope, were caught by surprise by the attacks that struck them.
This was because the British radar systems were ineffective against low-flying targets, especially over land.
There was a need for an airborne radar system, to give early warning and detect incoming attackers.
Without this, the RN would struggle to detect these targets.
Following the war, the RN procured the Searchwater radar system for the Sea King helicopter, providing this capability.
The radar systems on the Type 42s and Type 22s were improved, and the capability of Sea Dart to track and engage low-flying targets was increased.
