　航空戰力是美國陸戰隊最大的戰備問題，但並非多塞幾架飛機給他們就能解決。陸戰隊司令奈勒上將25日指出，事實上，他們現在已經擁有太多F/A-18「大黃蜂」戰機了，對其維修所費的時間與金錢成本，還不如直接以新款的F-35取代。

不在乎數量多寡而是要能飛

　奈勒在華府智庫「戰略暨國際研究中心」（CSIS）表示，陸戰隊的問題不在戰機數量，而是如何讓現有戰機「能飛」。這個情形在問題叢生的F/A-18身上尤其明顯。

F/A-18在美軍於伊拉克與阿富汗作戰期間負擔大量任務，往往在維修保養作業還未完全完成下就再度出勤，時至今日，F/A-18已淪落至「換新機比送修划算」的下場。

汰換戰機可省數十億任務支出

　奈勒指出，陸戰隊必須擺脫F/A-18，因為沒有時間等他們維修了。主管飛行單位的陸戰隊副司令戴維斯中將去年也曾表示，如果能加快淘汰舊戰機的腳步，可以省下數十億美元的任務支出。許多狀況不堪的F/A-18，可藉由「機庫皇后」（hangar queen）的角色，以替其他戰機提供零件的方式做出更多貢獻。

　美國陸戰隊目前計畫以353架F-35B、67架F-35C取代F/A-18、EA-6B電戰機與AV-8B攻擊機，去年11月已在日本岩國基地完成F-35B前進部署計畫。奈勒表示，陸戰隊的航空戰力規劃就是，只要買了新飛機，一定要設法處理掉舊機，不論是除役或出售他國。

While not required, U.S. airplane maker’s absence suggests it may see its chances of a successful bid as slim.

The comments come after Boeing skipped an information session today at which government officials provided industry with a snapshot of Canada’s plan to purchase 88 new fighter jets in the coming years for an estimated $15 billion to $19 billion.

The Liberals announced in November that they were walking away from their plan to buy 18 Super Hornets to temporarily augment Canada’s CF-18 fleet because of the U.S. aerospace giant’s trade dispute with Bombardier.

Australian F-18 fighter jets destined for 4 Wing Cold Lake to supplement Canada’s aging CF-18 fighter fleet will require upgrades to their ejection seats and external aircraft lighting before they can take to the skies with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

About $150 million is spent each year on maintenance of the CF-18s, which are due to be phased out starting in the second half of 2020.
