漢翔預計以 IDF 經國號戰機為藍本，研發新一代 T-5「藍鵲」高級教練機。新一代高教機換裝無後燃器的 F-124 發動機，並將雷達拆除。根據國防部規畫，採購 66 架高級噴射教練機總費用 686 億元，預計 2019 年可出廠首架原型機，最快在 2020 年進行首飛。新一代教練機將用來取代服役超過 30 年的 AT-3 噴射教練機與 F-5F 部訓機。

空軍台東基地豎立F-5尾翼

台東空軍基地第7聯隊隊部前，豎起一片F-5E/F戰機的垂直尾翼，以英文寫著「Since 1974」，象徵F-5E/F戰機自1974年開始服役，而數字1196364代表F-5E/F服役至今飛行時數達119萬餘小時，捍衛台海超過40年仍老當益壯。

不過，F-5E/F「年事已高」，現多半用在訓練任務，空軍已展開高級教練機生產計畫，根據空軍規劃，高教機生產完成後，將全數部署在空軍台東志航基地，並優先汰換老舊的F-5戰機，66架高教機預計在2026年6月前交機成軍，屆時F-5戰機就可全數汰除。
