WASHINGTON - The United States has agreed to provide the Chinese Nationalist government with a squadron of F-104 Starfighter jets from Air Force "excess stocks," while Congress wrangles over proposals to equip the Taiwan armed forces with the more advanced Phantom jet fighter bombers.
Administration officials confirmed that the decision to turn the squadron of 18 planes over to the Chinese Nationalist air force had been made but they said it might take several months before the planes were actually delivered.
They said the transfer was approved by the Defense Department shortly before last Nov. 30.
The Nationalist Chinese are to receive the Starfighters at no cost, except for packaging and handling, under the provisions of the military assitance program.
